Has the Xbox 360 Been Banned?
Microsoft and Motorola Mobility have been in a nasty legal battle for a while. But now it’s really starting to get serious.
A U.S. International Trade Commission Judge has come to a ruling that all Xbox 360 consoles should face a complete ban in the U.S. Stating that they are in violation of 4 patents owned by Motorola.
The patents cover the H.264 video compression codecs used in controllers, accessories and the Xbox 360 console itself.
If this ban were passed, it would have a profound effect on the gaming and tech worlds. In fact, it would mean that the only choices of console this holiday season would be a PS3 or a Nintendo Wii U!
Microsoft argued that things covered in the patent should be made available for use. They also argued that banning the Xbox 360 would highly limit consumer choice. However, the Judge felt otherwise, stating that the protection of patent rights was way more important than giving consumers the choice of purchasing an Xbox 360.
Another point that can’t be overlooked is Google’s involvement in this matter. Remember, Google recently purchased Motorola Mobility for almost $13,000,000,000. And now that the deal has been finalized Microsoft now has a fight with Google on its hands! And it doesn’t stop there.
Motorola Mobility is also facing a potential sales ban because of a counter lawsuit by Microsoft. Well, one thing’s for sure, Google sure came into Motorola Mobility’s game at an interesting time. The worst that could come from this lawsuit is a total ban of Xbox 360 sales in the U.S. and Motorola Mobility’s complete withdraw from the U.S market.
Personally I’m really hoping that a higher authority (the executive office for example) decides to overturn the whole thing. Just thinking about the gaming world without the Xbox is like thinking about boom-box with no speakers!
Let’s not forget about the Xbox’s long and detailed history. The Xbox has played host to industry changing games like the Halo series, Forza Motorsport series and Gears of War series. The Xbox has such a bright future with games like Halo 4, GTA V, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and Forza Horizon that I would hate to see its life cut short.
